Frequently Asked Questions About WakeCap RTLS

What is WakeCap?

WakeCap is an IoT-based enterprise solution for improving safety & productivity at construction sites; by enabling real-time field reporting via integrated sensors into the existing personal safety equipment, and connecting jobsites via wireless mesh network technology.

How does it work?

WakeCap comprises an innovative harness that works seamlessly with a construction hard hat without compromising the structural integrity of the standard helmet; a non-GPS network that securely connects the worksite and scales up with the project and dashboard monitoring system, and thus easily integrates into existing applications and project management software.

What’s the benefit of using it, and who benefits?

With WakeCap, general contractors and owners can improve their site productivity, efficiency, and safety. The WakeCap Analytics Platform and customized dashboards provide detailed insights to site operations and the ability to constantly monitor:

  • Site workflow

  • Site congestion

  • All activity

  • Safety concerns

  • Employee tracing for health risks, such as Covid-19

  • And so much more

Can you give me one example of how a general contractor would use this to make the site better?

Hoist queuing hours is a key performance indicator (KPI) for some general contractors, WakeCap provides suitable analysis to optimize all hoists in order to minimize waiting time, and in some cases identify the need for additional hoists.

Do I have to run power to it on a job site?

Only the internet gateway needs to be connected. The network is created through a number of anchors placed around the job site that do not require any power or internet connection.

How long does the battery last?

The battery on the anchors lasts for 8+ years while the battery for the WakeCap Hardhat assets lasts for 1.5+ years so that workers can focus on their work. The WakeCap support teams remotely monitors all hardware, including battery levels.

Do you have proof that it works?

WakeCap connected 15+ job sites with 2000+ workers per project, working with construction leaders and acting as their digitisation partner to automate data collection, gain actionable insights and validate daily operational decisions in real-time. Predominately mega construction projects in Dubai and Saudi Arabia.

What kinds of projects have you deployed with?

WakeCap solutions can be implemented in both building and infrastructure sites. Our solution is also implemented on oil and gas, construction, and mining projects as well. The devices have earned certifications to allow their use in these industries, including ATEX, IP67, CE, RoHS, and EN62479.

How do you protect workers’ privacy?

With worker privacy specifically in mind, WakeCap’s IoT solution was intentionally designed not to use GPS or Bluetooth for location tracing.  Received Signal Strength Indication (RSSI) is used instead for anonymity, Making it impossible to locate workers outside the boundaries of the project area. There is an option to have a Code Number represent a worker instead of their name or personal details.  The focus of WakeCap is to identify project associated  trends and how they relate to improvements in Productivity, Efficiency, and Safety.

How do workers benefit from WakeCap?

Workers’ location and activity is identified within the boundaries of a project for the greater good of all involved within the project and to ensure every worker is safe especially when it comes to fall from height detection, ambient temperature extremes, and confined space crowd control, and more. We found that workers responded positively to the technology.

Can companies dealing with COVID-19 use it as they come back to work?

Yes, companies can enhance their Covid-19 safety response through WakeCap with social distancing alerts and reports, contact tracing and touchless attendance.
